Interview for Sensuelle Magazine [2007] [Nov. 21st, 2008|01:36 pm]

[music |Enslavement Of Beauty - Fifteen Minutes [Megalomania]]

On December, 2007 I have been contacted by someone in charge of Sensuelle Magazine to interview me.

Sadly, once I've sent the answers and after a quick email exchange, I never got any feedback nor news about it. I don't therefore know whether the interview/article has ever been published, however I was cleaning a bit my hard disk today and found it.

The magazine is French, the text was supposed being properly translated since I chose to answer in English [I am very unsure about my French as I never get the chance to speak it, so this was the wiser choice]. The interview featured some naive questions: the interviewer clearly told me she didn't know much about the whole alt thing. Some questions were interesting mostly because they were asked by a different point of view. The interview is about alt modeling, SG, feminism and, well, me.

Here's the full interview )

Hope you found it interesting. It was a shame to keep it sitting in my hard disk and well, after almost one year and no further contact, I don't think they need to keep the interview 'unpublished' anymore ;P

About to head to bed. The next two days will probably be long and busy. Shoots for a Microsoft commercial are in the wings and I'll be out of the office and on set. Sweet.

A lot of thoughts are running through my head. Last night I texted Chris back in Orlando and told him that I wanted him out here next year. He's been talking about picking up roots and relocating or just travelling and to be honest: this guy is more a brother than a friend and has been so for a decade and a half. When I imagine my life and the many directions it could go, he's *always* in it somewhere. If he wound up in Singapore as a barback in a Philipino whorehouse, I'd be sorta maudlin. Never mind that he'd probably think it was pretty fucking cool. There are just some people that I can't imagine living the rest of my life without.

Of course that means I need to really get focused on moving, which ought to be high on my priorities list anyway. I'm trying to buy a new, spiffy car and pay cash for it (cars don't appreciate in value and from a purely financial perspective should thus *never* be financed), move into a new house/apartment while at the same time moving a house full of furniture, etc across the country - none of my goals are cheap.

And that means I need to save, focus, and do whatever needs to be done.

Kinky Jimmy Buffett Fans, Rejoice [Nov. 20th, 2008|10:28 pm]

thomasroche
Just in case you were wondering, there is this post from a gentleman named "mind_fucker" over at Fetlife, a fetish-BDSM social networking site:

"Being that there are over a thousand groups on this site, I am just putting it out there that the fans of Jimmy Buffett are some KINKY folks who love to have a good time...If you are a fan, there is a group here called kinky parrotheads, come join us and perhaps we will have a margarita soon...fins up!!!"

I know you are all chomping at the bit to join the group. You will need to join Fetlife first.

You will not see me over there, however; I am not a "parrothead," even if Mr. Buffett did allegedly take 100 doses of ecstasy to St. Tropez and collaborate on a musical with Herman Wouk that played for six weeks in Miami, called Don't Stop the Carnival. I'm not making this up. Could I make this up? Granted, if Mr. Buffett did not exist, it would become necessary to invent him... but, thank Providence, he does exist.

I will admit I am tempted to like anyone with a song called Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw, but it's a passing temptation; when I become inebriated enough I do occasionally play and sing Buffett's Were You Born An Asshole (Or Did You Work At It Your Whole Life). But "Kinky Parrotheads?" My regrets, "mind_fucker."

The Politics of China's Tarim Mummies [Nov. 20th, 2008|08:52 pm]

Tarim Mummy
Originally uploaded by Thomas Roche
There is a fascinating story in the New York Times about the politics of China's Xinjiang Uighur's Autonomous Region, as seen through the exhibiton of the more than 200 "Tarim mummies" from the area. The Chinese government faces a separatist movement of the Uighurs or Uyghurs, a Muslim people who speak a Turkic-Altaic language. The Chinese government claims that the region, which lies in Central Asia in the far West of China, was first settled by people from the Chinese interior. Most scholars think the Uighurs ended up in Xinjiang in the 10th Century.

But the oldest mummies, which date back to the early 2nd millennium BCE, appear to indicate that the first settlers of the area were, in fact, from the steppes further to the West. The Tarim mummies have become a symbol of Uighur pride, and there's even a nationalistic pop song about one of them, the "Loulan Beauty," a female mummy of which the Times says "her high cheekbones and long nose the most obvious signs that she is not what one thinks of as Chinese." Other data seems to indicate that the early settlers of the region were from actually from all over the place -- that, situated on the Silk Road, Xinjiang was a melting pot.

The Chinese government, as it turns out, "has been unwilling to give broad access to foreign scientists to conduct genetic tests on the mummies," since the question of who first settled Xinjiang is perceived as lending credence to one side or the other in the struggle for political control of the province.

Kyle Drinkwine

"Meet Kyle Drinkwine. The Wisconsin man, 24, allegedly became so incensed by a lackluster karaoke performance of a heavy metal song that he assaulted the singer and a second man, police charge. According to a River Falls Police Department report, Drinkwine throttled singer James Mischler, 28, and his friend Cyrus Kozub, 29, "over one's ability to sing karaoke." Though cops did not specify which song set Drinkwine off last week, Kozub told TSG that Mischler was performing "Holy Diver," the title cut on Dio's 1983 debut album (the band is fronted by Ronnie James Dio, the former Black Sabbath lead singer). [In a subsequent interview, Mischler told TSG that when Drinkwine and some cronies started heckling him, he responded with a putdown about the "big gaudy crucifix" worn by Drinkwine. "I told him he should find a better vending machine for his jewelry," Mischler recalled, adding that the comment angered the heckler, who himself had earlier performed an Eminem song."

Hrmmm, so it seems this crappy rip off i mentioned in my last post is not alone!

They are a German company called 'Burlesque Couture' http://www.burlesque-couture.de and i am certainly not the only one they have ripped off!
Also they get their items made in China - good luck getting a nice fit and cut out of that!

So anyway, it seems they have stopped bidding on the auction so thats something, hopefully they have been spooked enough to not attempt to put it on their site!

Thanks for all the nice words :D

Empty? [Nov. 20th, 2008|10:16 am]

[mood |feeling empty]

I feel so empty now that the election is over. It's surely a common phenomenon among those of us who feverishly scanned the political blogs and polling sites on a nearly hourly basis during the last weeks of the election, but damn, it's annoying and disorienting!

It seems so impossible that we won, yet we did. How on earth will the next stage feel?

Wish I could channel some of this loss of anything to do feeling into creating latex pieces, but alas, I seem permanently stalled and utterly doubtful over the whole enterprise. Need a jump start! How? Suggestions?

Me about to nibble on Mr. A's ear some more...

Can't remember if this is a weekly or monthly night, but if you're in the area you should come and check it out. A ton of fun while still being rather low key, which in my book makes for a really nice evening out.
